Why Cats Are Picky Eaters and How to Work With Them

Hello, hoomans. It’s me, Princess Ram — and yes, I’m very particular about my food. I know, I know, some cats will eat anything you put in front of them, but not me. I’ve got standards. Today, I’m going to tell you why cats like me are so picky, and how you can work with us instead of against us.
1. Cats Are Natural Grazers
Unlike dogs, who are more likely to wolf down their meals in one sitting, cats are natural grazers. We prefer to nibble and take our time. If my bowl’s been sitting there too long, I might lose interest — it’s not fresh anymore! That’s why I love when my hoomans give me smaller meals throughout the day.
2. We Have Sensitive Taste Buds
Our sense of taste is much more sensitive than yours. Some foods might taste bland or overly strong to us, and we’ll refuse to eat them. It’s not that we’re being stubborn (okay, maybe a little), but our delicate palates just don’t like everything.
3. Texture Matters More Than You Think
Texture is everything to me. I won’t eat a meal if it’s too soft, too dry, or too chunky. I prefer smooth, wet foods, and if it’s not the right consistency, I’ll just look at it like you’ve betrayed me.
4. We’re Creatures of Habit
Once we like something, we stick with it. We’re creatures of habit, so if you’ve found a flavour we like, stick to it — changing things up suddenly might make me turn my nose up.
5. How to Help Us Try New Foods
If you’re trying to get me to try new foods (good luck), here’s a trick: start by mixing it with something I already love. Add a little bit of that new food on top of my regular meal. That way, I get used to the new taste without it being too overwhelming.
So, don’t take it personally when I turn my nose up at a meal. I’m just a little… picky. But with patience (and some tasty food toppers), I’ll eventually come around.
Purrs,
— Princess Ram, the Fussy Foodie
